Strategies for HEIs: Excelling in QS and THE International Rankings

On September 19-20, 2023, Tashkent played host to a seminar titled “Strategies for HEIs: Excelling in QS and THE International Rankings.” This event was organized by the National Erasmus+ Office in Uzbekistan, the seminar brought together higher education institutions (HEIs), policymakers, and academic leaders from across the region to discuss strategies for enhancing their visibility and performance in globally recognized university rankings, such as QS World University Rankings and Times Higher Education (THE) rankings. Teaching staff of the International University for the Humanities and Development participated in this conference online. Professor Ellen Hazelkorn as main a presenter of the meeting introduces vital presentations regarding the expertise in the considered field.

During two days session participants discussed the following crucial issues on understanding the importance of rankings. University rankings have become increasingly influential in shaping the global higher education landscape. They serve as key indicators for prospective students, academic partnerships, and funding opportunities. The QS and THE rankings are among the most widely referenced and can significantly impact an institution’s reputation and ability to attract international talent.

The seminar emphasized the importance of adopting data-driven strategies to improve rankings. Participants were introduced to the various metrics used by QS and THE, including academic reputation, research output, faculty/student ratio, and international diversity. Workshops highlighted how HEIs can effectively collect and analyze data to align with these metrics, fostering a culture of evidence-based decision-making.

Research output remains a critical factor in rankings. Sessions focused on strategies for enhancing research visibility and impact, including collaborations with industry, international partnerships, and publication in high-impact journals. Experts shared insights on building research capacity and securing funding to drive innovation and scholarly excellence.

The quality of student experience is increasingly scrutinized in rankings. Discussions centered on improving academic programs, support services, and extracurricular activities to foster a conducive learning environment. Institutions were encouraged to actively seek student feedback and implement changes that enhance satisfaction and retention.

A significant theme of the seminar was the need for HEIs to broaden their international footprint. Strategies for attracting international students and fostering global partnerships were explored. Participants learned about initiatives such as student and faculty exchange programs, dual-degree offerings, and joint research projects to enhance their institution's global standing.

Effective communication strategies are essential in building and maintaining a positive institutional reputation. The seminar included sessions on branding, digital presence, and media engagement. Participants were urged to actively showcase their achievements and unique offerings through various platforms to bolster their visibility in the global education market.

The seminar provided a platform for networking among participants, facilitating the exchange of ideas and best practices. Collaborative initiatives were encouraged, allowing institutions to support one another in their pursuit of higher rankings. The National Erasmus+ Office emphasized the importance of regional cooperation to enhance the collective standing of Central Asian HEIs on the global stage.

In conclusion, it is important to state that the “Strategies for HEIs: Excelling in QS and THE International Rankings” seminar in Tashkent was a significant step towards empowering higher education institutions in the region. By focusing on data-driven strategies, research enhancement, student experience, internationalization, and reputation management, participants left with practical tools and insights to elevate their institutions in global rankings.

As the landscape of higher education continues to evolve, the commitment demonstrated by the National Erasmus+ Office and the participating institutions to strive for excellence in international rankings will undoubtedly contribute to the growth and development of region’s higher education system.
